On the 13th February, DITSU is hosting a very special event, its first ever Drag Race. It’s very exciting and we’re all very excited and it’s going to be amazing. Our reference, inspiration and spiritual home for this event is of course Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

Follow our facebook event page for the most up to date info

First a little 101 on the artistic expression that is known as Drag “Drag queens are people, usually (but not exclusively) male, who dress in women’s clothing and often act with exaggerated femininity and in feminine gender roles with a primarily entertaining purpose. They often exaggerate make-up such as eyelashes for dramatic, comedic or satirical effect. Drag queens are closely associated with gay men and gay culture but can be of any sexual orientation or even gender identity. They vary widely by class, culture, and dedication, from professionals who star in films to people who try drag very occasionally.” (Wiki)

Ok, so most of you are like

I just wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page. If you have never seen any Drag  performances or watched Ru Pauls Drag Race you must, immeidately stay in bed and watch as many episodes until you are sprouting sassy catchphrases as if you are Michelle Visage herself.

Reasons why Drag Race is everything:

Shade

Throwing shade or reading  as it’s known in the drag world is a form of venting, which can be hilarious, cathartic and  a display of wit and wickedness. Imagine if you class mates got to call you out on your weakness (yes, everyone has noticed that you’re always late/never have change for coffee/never turn up to group assignment meetings). It’s a way to air grievances and move on with a clean slate (although sometimes that doesn’t happen) that is much more healthy than being passive aggressive forever.

Lip Sync for Your Life

We have all danced around the house imaging we were Miley/Britney/Taylor/Beyoncé, but the Drag Race Lip Sync is NEXT LEVEL. When at it’s best, it is a work of art that will prompt an existential crisis and when it’s done badly, well lets just say Charlie Hides and leave that right there.

Special mention to the death drop. Like once I trip over backwards and nearly fell over and I couln’t walk properly for 2 weeks. These gals do this:

The Look

While not all Drag Queens are a wiz at the sewing machine, the look are an integral part of the show. If they don’t get it right, they are draaagggged through the mud. But then it is done right – The make-up! That tuck! Look at all of the hot-glued sequences and damn how can she still walk in that??!!

Personalities

You hate one person in the beginning, and then watch them grow, make mistakes, become kinder. Also, you might still kinda hate someone but have a begrudging respect for them. Some are sweethearts, others have stories that will break your heart. Some are LOUD, some are quiet, but you will have an opinion on them all. Whose your fav? And why?

Deep Stuff

If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?

Can I get an Amen up in here? Yes, you can, Ru. Yes You Can. Every episode of Drag Race ends with Queen Ru reciting this line.  It is a self evident slogan that never stops hitting home. Drag Race is about talent, costumes, music, ambition but its also about being human, the challenges that face us all as individuals and in the end how if we don’t love ourselves we’re ain’t going to get very far. AMEN!

Lets Go Out Out!

Ok, so Drag Race on the telly is amazing and so so shiny and you can watch it in your pajamas and you can try and out sync the the lip syncers while your dog is giving you major side eye because that is not how you should sashay away and also you’ve got dried in koka noodles on the pjs.

But picture this – lets get fancied up and get with a load of people in the same room and lets party, dance, have fun, watch people perform to fab music and generally have a good time.

And you can always eat noodles when you get home…
